The First of the Bananas

I have been looking for Red Dacca and Blue Java bananas for a while now. I love bananas and from all my research these should be some of the best tasting varieties out there.

It has taken me a while to find any, Australia has some extremely strict Bio Security laws and due to bananas being a high-risk crop they are even stricter. NSW has a Banana Protected Area which requires strict permits to move any banana production equipment and plants around into.

While I don’t live in the Banana Protected Area, most states don’t allow the transport of banana plants between each other. This has made finding these specific varieties hard. Finally, last week I found someone in Sydney (2hrs South) was selling some Red Dacca suckers.

Below are some pictures. We ended up taking my wife’s Corolla thinking the suckers wouldn’t be taller than 1 metre. Turns out the largest sucker would have been closer to 3 metres. I got 2 Dacca suckers and 2 Pisang Ceylan.

I think I have found a lead on Blue Java’s but will have to wait to see how that pans out.
